Cumberland Choral Arts was founded in 1991 by Mr. Allen Porter of Methodist College. He brought people together to sing the Mozart Requiem. Mr. Porter’s group continued to perform other great choral works for the community. From these humble beginnings, Cumberland Oratorio Singers was born.
At the end of Mr. Porter’s tenure, Dr. Michael Martin took over as artistic director. Dr. Martin is the Director of Choral Activities and Director of Music Education and Coordinator of Fine Arts Management at Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC.
Mr. Jason Britt took over as artist director from 2017-2020, expanding the performance from traditional choral works to include more contemporary works such as jazz and show tunes. In the spring of 2020, Dr. Michael Martin returned to Cumberland Choral Arts as the Art Director. Donna Jo Mangus heads the Youth Chorus.
Inspired by the joy of singing and hearing choral music, the Cumberland Choral Arts strives to be a premier symphonic chorus through the outstanding performance of choral masterworks. With a commitment to excellence and education for over 25 years, we work collaboratively with all singers to foster a vibrant, diverse, and interactive choral community, educate our singers and audiences, and extend our reach to the youth of Cumberland County and the Sandhills region.
